"Onguma was my introduction to safari and it changed everything. The lodges are design-forward without sacrificing soul. The wildlife is abundant but never crowded. I wanted to create something for travellers who want safari done right: intimate, immersive, unforgettable. This itinerary is exactly what I wish someone had handed me."
My Itinerary
I landed in Windhoek and picked up my rental car for the 6.5 hour drive north to Onguma. The road itself became part of the experience. Stopping at roadside stalls, watching the landscape shift from bushveld to open savanna. By the time I reached Onguma, the light was golden.
I checked into Camp Kala, an intimate tented camp overlooking Fisher's Pan. That first evening, I just sat on my deck watching elephants gather at the waterhole as the sun set. No game drive needed. The wildlife came to me.
I woke before dawn for my first proper game drive into Etosha. The guides knew exactly where to find the animals. Within the first hour, I'd seen a pride of lions lazing in the morning light and a tower of giraffes crossing the salt pan.
The afternoon drive took me deeper into the park. Zebra, oryx, springbok everywhere. I ended the day with a night drive on Onguma's private reserve, spotting species I'd never see by day. Dinner was under the stars, surrounded by the sounds of the bush.
I moved to Onguma The Fort for my last night. This place is special. It's built directly over a waterhole, so I spent hours just watching from my balcony as elephants, zebra, and antelope came to drink. No need to go anywhere.
I did one last game drive into Etosha in the afternoon, then came back for sundowners on the viewing deck. Watching the waterhole come alive at dusk, with a drink in hand, was the perfect way to end this trip.
I took one final morning walk around the reserve before brunch at the lodge. The drive back to Windhoek gave me time to process everything I'd seen. Three nights felt like the perfect amount of time to disconnect and really experience this place.
