Island Heritage

The Journey

Lamu stopped me in my tracks. The moment you step off the boat, you're transported centuries back in time. No cars—just donkeys, dhows, and the haunting calls to prayer echoing through coral stone alleyways. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement, and it feels like a living, breathing museum.

I've stayed in restored Swahili townhouses with rooftops overlooking the waterfront, sailed at sunset on traditional dhows, and gotten completely lost in the labyrinth of ancient streets. This itinerary is how I want you to experience Lamu—slowly, deeply, unforgettably.

Day by Day

Day 1

Arrival on the Island

You'll fly into the tiny Lamu airstrip and transfer by boat to Lamu Town—that boat ride is when the magic begins. Your hotel is a restored Swahili townhouse with those famous carved wooden doors and a rooftop terrace that will become your favorite spot. Spend the afternoon getting wonderfully lost in the narrow streets. As the sun sets, find your way to a rooftop bar. Trust me on this.

Day 2

Lamu Town Heritage

A morning walking tour with a local guide changes everything. You'll visit the Lamu Museum, peek inside ancient mosques, and start noticing the details on those carved doors—each one tells a story. Lunch happens in a hidden courtyard restaurant that you'd never find on your own. Afternoon is yours: shop for crafts, people-watch from a coffee shop, or just wander. But don't miss the sunset dhow cruise—it's non-negotiable.

Day 3

Shela Beach & Dhow Sail

Today we go to Shela—a short boat ride to a village with a 12-kilometer beach that's often completely empty. Swim, lie on the sand, order lunch at a beachside spot where fresh seafood appears on demand. In the afternoon, you'll learn to sail a dhow the traditional way. It's meditative, beautiful, and unlike anything else. Back to Lamu Town for one last evening wandering those atmospheric streets.

Day 4

Departure

Slow breakfast on the rooftop, watching the waterfront come alive. Take your time—Lamu doesn't reward rushing. One last wander, maybe pick up something you've been eyeing, then the boat takes you back to the airstrip. You'll already be planning your return.
